SUMMARY:Wind Energy: A New Approach for Capturing an Untapped Energy Source
DESCRIPTION:Although it is very eco-friendly\, growth in the wind turbine industry is slowing down. Today’s wind farms generally employ Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs)\, but their construction involves the major logistical feat of transporting huge blades (as long as 118 meters) to locations that are often remote. However\, as HAWTs cannot handle the most turbulent air\, they must be placed high above the ground and far apart from one another. \n\n\n\nPromising research out of CalTech\, Stanford\, and other universities predicts that Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs)\, which are placed less than 100 feet above the ground in wind farms under existing HAWTs\, will create synergies such that the overall energy output from their simultaneous operation is greater than what each would produce on its own. \n\n\n\nOur speaker Kevin Wolf co-founded Wind Harvest\, a new company intending to introduce VAWTs. Their latest prototype has been able to operate in turbulent conditions at the UL test facility in Texas and achieve Technology Readiness Level 7. Core to this turbine’s success is its use of a VAWT aeroelastic engineering model validated using an earlier prototype’s field data. Out of this earlier experience\, the engineering team came up with nine new inventions\, including an innovative hinge design that is critical for the 70-year predicted fatigue life life based on a typical 15 million rotations per year. \n\n\n\nCome to this event and learn about this innovative technology that could revive the wind turbine industry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker\, Kevin Wolf of Wind Harvest\, Inc. \n\n\n\nKevin Wolf is the CEO and co-founder of Wind Harvest. He has been an officer with the Company since 2006\, and is an expert on vertical axis wind turbine technology and mid-level wind markets. Kevin is the author of papers published in industry magazines\, and with California Energy Commission grants. His degree in Evolution and Ecology from UC Davis gives him a solid science background that is widely useful to the Wind Harvest.  Kevin is the company’s expert on the synergy of VAWTs used in wind farms\, their impact on birds and bats\, and the Technology Readiness Level process\, and one of the inventors of company patents.

SUMMARY:Making Your Home -- and the Grid -- More Resilient
DESCRIPTION:Our guest s peaker will be Brock Glassman – Northern California District Manager for ES Solar. \n\n\n\nAs our EVASV chapter Vice President George Stuckert pointed out in his recent email “Enough of PG&E rate increases\,” PG&E has killed the Solar industry in Northern California. Many solar installers have lost their jobs and several of the companies they worked for have gone out of business since the CPUC allowed the rates PG&E pays for residential solar power to be greatly reduced. \n\n\n\nGeorge invited us to sign a petition to turn PG&E from an investor owned utility into a public utility similar to Santa Clara’s city owned utility: Silicon Valley Power. \n\n\n\nHowever\, there is one segment of the solar industry that is doing well\, in spite of the drastic reduction in what solar system owners now earn by selling their power to the grid. That segment of the solar industry is booming because they combine the solar panels with battery storage. Ironically\, PG&E will actually pay you to make your solar system with battery storage available to provide power to the grid in times of peak customer demand. \n\n\n\nWhy do they do this? By having a large number of solar and battery storage systems available to meet peak demands\, they don’t have to operate their natural gas peaker power plants or build new ones to meet future demand. Battery storage captures the output of the solar panels during the day\, and makes it available around the clock. So instead of selling your surplus power to PG&E at a very low rate\, you charge your batteries and use your own power\, instead of buying it from PG&E when their rates are high. \n\n\n\nWith the recent rain and wind storms in California\, many PG&E customers lost power for an extended period and some had the food in their refrigerator spoil. If they had solar with battery backup\, they could keep the lights on\, run their refrigerator\, computers\, TVs\, etc. The automatic transfer switch seamlessly changes the home’s power source to battery power after a PG&E outage. \n\n\n\nDuring the meeting\, Brock will explain how all of this works and how the solar battery system can actually pay for itself from the money you save on your PG&E bill. You don’t need to pay anything up front to get the system installed. It is a monthly pay-as-you-go system where you actually pay less for all these benefits and spend significantly less than you were paying PG&E before. \n\n\n\nBrock’s company does all of the work for you and offers a generous guarantee. They are the exclusive US distributor for the German battery company Sonnen. Sonnen is the battery supplier that PG&E likes best\, because their batteries have greater capacity and much longer life than the ones used in the Tesla Power Wall. \n\n\n\nOn top of that\, the Sonnen batteries use the Lithium Iron Phosphate chemistry that cannot catch fire. The Tesla batteries have a flammable electrolyte that has caused fires in several Tesla car crashes. While the presentation will focus on residential solar systems\, Brock’s company has built the largest virtual power plant in the US in partnership with a company owned by Warren Buffet. \n\n\n\nIt would be nice if the petition that George mentioned actually succeeds. Either way\, if a solar system can be installed on your home\, you can avoid PG&E’s rate increases\, be spared from future power outages and pay even less that you were paying before the rate increases. \n\n\n\nJoin the Zoom meeting at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89063594420?pwd=U3YxYWpJai9zQXVLNmhMeW1kTDZVdz09\, advance registration is not required. This meeting will be recorded.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting with Arcimoto Presentation
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend our EAASV monthly meeting on Saturday November 19th at 1 PM.The interim CEO of Arcimoto will give us a presentation and answer our questions afterward. \n\n\n\nHere is the Zoom link (you must register in advance): \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0qdOisqTsoHtReXrPDMvr0LZbCXQN2i3c2 \n\n\n\nDid any of you get a test drive of the Arcimoto FUV (Fun Utility Vehicle) in San Jose last week?If you missed it\, you can tune in to our meeting and see why this EV makes a lot of sense in today’s environment. When I went to the test drive registration page\, the San Jose location was no longer available. \n\n\n\nLong time EAASV member Doug Brentlinger contacted me and suggested trying the location in Walnut Creek.   \n\n\n\nIt turned out that we were able to reserve a time slot at that location. \n\n\n\nArcimoto had two FUVs available there for test drives\, so I got the one with doors and Doug took the one without the doors.   \n\n\n\nSee the attached photos. \n\n\n\nWe both sat in the back seat of our FUVs while the Arcimoto employees drove us to the half-way point on the test drive route.   \n\n\n\nThen we switched places and got to drive back to the starting point.   \n\n\n\nDoug and I both had a lot of fun driving back and the vehicles truly live up to their name. \n\n\n\nThese 3 wheelers were easy to drive and the learning curve took less than 5 minutes.   \n\n\n\nThe controls were very intuitive and the display was very well laid out.   \n\n\n\nYou get all the benefits of a motorcycle without needing a helmet and because it has three wheels\, there is no worry about falling over or having to put your foot down when stopped at traffic lights or stop signs.  You can even drive it in the carpool lane on the freeway without needing the HOV stickers. \n\n\n\nThere are also some “warm” features like heated handlebar grips\, a dashboard and a windshield.  The rear storage compartment will hold groceries\, etc. and they have other models that are specifically designed for delivery applications.  Learn more at our meeting.

SUMMARY:October Meeting: DCC Electric
DESCRIPTION:One of the obstacles to wider EV adoption is the high cost of upgrading the electric service panel\, in the case where no empty breaker slots are available. There is a similar (but magnified) problem in multi-unit dwellings\, where there will be a need for multiple EV chargers in the zero-emission future. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a presentation with Christian Tarragon of DCC Electric\, who offers a NEC-compliant solution for the load management problem. Please register in advance for the Zoom meeting at \n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMsf–uqD0rEtyZtEPLbY4G9AR1dpmYkLw_ \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. If you don’t receive this e-mail after 10 minutes\, please check your spam folder. This meeting will be recorded. \n\n\n\nPlease note that we are meeting at 1:00pm pacific time\, not our usual meeting time.

SUMMARY:EVASV Monthly Meeting with Rejoule Presentation
DESCRIPTION:This event is a re-schedule of our Feb 19 meeting\, which was cancelled due to technical difficulties. Note that unlike most recent meeting\, we will meet in the afternoon on March 5. \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, we will dive into ReJoule’s solution to make it more economical and streamlined to reuse electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Repurposing reduces the environmental impacts of battery waste\, but it’s not without its challenges. Zora Chung\, ReJoule’s cofounder and CFO will highlight the obstacles associated with testing used EV batteries\, an overview of ReJoule’s solution\, the results of some case studies\, and other issues we’ve experienced when trying to repurpose used EV batteries.Batteries that are not suitable for repurposing can be recycled. Battery recycling companies can reclaim the materials such as lithium\, nickel\, copper\, aluminum and other materials which can then be used to manufacture new batteries. \n\n\n\nYou are invited to a Zoom meeting. When: Mar 5\, 2022 02:00 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada) \n\n\n\nRegister in advance for this meeting:https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMld-iorT0uHNfsyPsO-m1YymwQFr5ZHlz- \n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting with Aeon Charge
DESCRIPTION:This month we are having a presentation from AeonCharge to learn about their smartphone app that simplifies charging your EV at charging stations from multiple networks. This startup company was founded by EV drivers for EV drivers to take the hassle out of accessing public charging stations.AeonCharge is based in Seattle. They have been endorsed by many EAA chapters across the country and have won several competitions and funding grants. They are growing fast and looking for beta testers and investors.I have included an introduction below from one of the founders who will be giving us the presentation. \n\n\n\nJoin Zoom Meetinghttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88083220664?pwd=TE11bWE3cldrVTZEUFB0UjFwcjRhUT09 \n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 880 8322 0664Passcode: 742236Meeting ID: 880 8322 0664Passcode: 742236 \n\n\n\nHi Silicon Valley Electric Auto Association members\, \n\n\n\nI am Lin from AeonCharge Alliance. In the last four months\, Jerry Pohorsky has been providing support and advice to our alliance. A little about us\, AeonCharge is an alliance founded and funded by EV drivers and EV organization leaders across the United States with the goal to make EV charging more convenient. We made a universal mobile app that allows EV drivers to locate\, activate\, and pay for charging across networks. You can now charge your EV at any charger with just the AeonCharge app without having to juggle through multiple different network apps. Moreover\, as an alliance\, we don’t care about profit\, which is why we don’t charge any extra cost from EV drivers to use AeonCharge.  \n\n\n\nWe launched our private beta a few months ago\, and we have more than 7000 waitlisted users. The access to our mobile app is by invitation only because we are limiting our beta users to a few hundred to ensure the best experience. However\, our team wants to prioritize Silicon Valley EAA’s members as our beta users to show our gratitude for all that Jerry has done. So\, feel free to sign up for our waitlist through the following link: https://form.typeform.com/to/D6FNGSBd (The form will only take less than 2 minutes). \n\n\n\nI will be joining your monthly chapter meeting on Jan 22.
